Preston B. Holtzendorff, Jr. papers, 1918-1973.

These papers contain correspondence, photographs, two scrapbooks, and miscellaneous items related to Preston B. Holtzendorff, Jr., longtime Clemson General Secretary of the YMCA. Among the correspondence are items sent and received during the period 1919-1971. There are one hundred seven photographs which depict scenes such as the Clemson Blue Ridge Delegation during the years 1929 and 1932; buildings such as Tillman Hall, the "Y" cabin near the Seneca River, and Holtzendorff Hall; scenes from Holtzendorff's time in the U.S. Army Air Corps; and various Clemson cadet related photographs. Among the miscellaneous items in these papers are a biography of Holtzendorff by T. S. Buie, 1973; a certificate of graduation from the U.S. School of Aeronautics, 1918; Clemson Cadet Handbook, 1934 and "Thumbers Philosophy" (no date); and personal bank statements, Clemson employee earnings, and income tax records, 1944-1950. The two scrapbooks reflect life at the Clemson YMCA through photographs, news clippings, brochures, and announcements.

Preston B. Holtzendorff, Jr. was born on November 9, 1894 near Rome, Georgia, the son of Preston B. Holtzendorff, Sr. and Agnes W. Drake Holtzendorff. He graduated from law school at the University of Georgia in 1916. Shortly afterwards in June 1916 he came to Clemson College at the post of Assistant General Secretary of the YMCA before being called in February 1918 into the military service during World War I.
